How California taxes your paycheck
California has ten brackets, from 1% to 13.3%, and its top rate is the highest in the country (it includes a 1% surcharge on income above $1 million). Most workers also pay 1.3% for State Disability Insurance (SDI), which has had no wage cap since 2024.
Every paycheck also loses federal income tax (10% to 37% after a $16,100 standard deduction for single filers), 6.2% for Social Security on wages up to $184,500, and 1.45% for Medicare, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000.

What this estimate leaves out
Every estimate assumes one earner with wages only, the 2026 standard deduction, and no tax credits. It leaves out the new federal deductions for tips, overtime and seniors, the child tax credit, itemized deductions, and pre-tax health insurance. For California, it also doesn't include the renter's credit, the dependent exemption credit and the phase-out of exemption credits at high incomes. Your actual paycheck withholding can differ from your final tax bill.
